Note: death date engraved on stone is INCORRECT.

Ephraim Leighton was the son of Benjamin and Jane [Webber] Leighton. He is a great-great-great grandson of Thomas Leighton the immigrant, who arrived in Dover, New Hampshire in 1633.

"...Ephraim Leighton, who came up the Kennebec [River] with his father, Benjamin, when there were but three houses in Augusta, and made their way, by blazed trees, to Mt. Vernon, where the family were early settlers; thence Ephraim returned to Augusta about 1813." from "Illustrated history of Kennebec County, Maine" by Henry D. Kingsbury, page 477.

May 1776: Ephraim enlisted at Edgecomb [he was only eleven], in Capt. Henry Tibbetts co., Col Cargill's Massachusetts regiment., and served as a waiter to Capt. Tibbetts. He was discharged in November 1776 and later on applied for a pension and was accepted.

Ephraim was a farmer and during his life, he lived in Edgecomb, Rome, Mount Vernon, Parkman and Augusta, Maine.

Ephraim married Esther Tibbetts November 23, 1789 in Rome, Maine. They were the parents of eight children: Stephen, Henry, Ephraim Jr., Susanna, Esther, Charlotte, Anna and Isaac. [Esther Tibbetts is not buried here and I am currently searching for her grave site and would appreciate ideas and leads.]

Buried here are: his son [Ephraim Jr], his daughter-in-law Hannah Brainard [Ephraim Jr's wife]; two daughters Susan K. [Asa] Cook and Ann B. [Charles] Bearce; and a grandson Sullivan A. [son of Ephraim Jr. and Hannah].

The date of 1849 on Ephraim's headstone is wrong. His death date has been proved by an obit found in the April 1, 1851 Portland Advertiser.

NOTE: The cemetery here can be a bit confusing. Mount Pleasant is located within the confines of Mount Hope and separated only by a narrow road and marked by a "Mt. Pleasant" street sign. One enters under the "Mount Hope" main entry arch [see photo]. See map attached to this memorial for details. FYI: There is third cemetery down the hill east from Mount Pleasant [the hill indicates the transition from Mt. Pleasant to this other cemetery] and two more across Winthrop Street to the south. All are located in the northwest corner of Augusta, near the airport.
