Named for her father's mother, Lavernia Ann Cain (1824-1884), Laverna was the daughter of George C. "Chick" and Ella Elmore Harmon. Nicknamed "Vernie", she was quite bright and first became a school teacher at Tyro and then a secretary for the Robert M. Carrier Lumber Company at Sardis, Mississippi. She married Weedie Garrett, manager of the Carrier Lumber Company's Commissary Store who had moved to the area from Stanton, Kentucky, in 1908. They had two children, Lou Ella and George Alvin Garrett. The family was active in the Sardis Presbyterian Church. Vernie was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She stood only about 4 feet 11 inches tall and was was a lot of fun to be around, according to many in her family. In 1953, she and Weedie moved to Oxford, Mississippi and resided in an apartment attached to the home of their daughter Lou Ella and her husband, Lee L. Byers. Vernie spent the last few months of her life in the Byers Nursing Home at Batesville, Mississippi.
