Rachel's first husband, Benjamin Franklin Hemsing, died in 1916. On May 17, 1922 she married James G Boyd. James was a widower; his first wife was Mary Caroline Barndt, Rachel's half sister.

Rachel's mother, Salome, was Jacob Barndt's first wife. He died in 1850. She then married Stephen Horning in 1853. Salome and Stephen had Rachel Rosetta Horning and Anna Sophia Horning. Rachel also had half siblings: Mary, Irving, and Sibylle Barndt (her mother's children)and Frederick Lorenzo Horning (her father's son from his first marriage to Rachel Barndt that ended when she died after giving birth).
