Oren L. James, 100, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday morning, December 23, 2009, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born April 3, 1909 near Rose Hill, the son of William I. and Mary Jane Lisk James. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1928. In 1928, he began working at the old A & P Grocery store in Oskaloosa and worked there for 20 years. On September 5, 1937, Oren was united in marriage to Bernice "Bee" Barr at Lancaster, Missouri, and Bee died August 18, 2003. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On January 1, 1949, Oren went into partnership with Raymond Allison in the old Dean's Cigar and News store in Oskaloosa for another 20 years. He then was a Real Estate agent in Oskaloosa for 20 years, first with Cliff McCurdy, and later Phyllis McMains. He enjoyed collecting buckeyes, and giving them out to family and friends for good luck. Oren was a member of Tri-Luminar Lodge A.F. & A.M., the American Legion, Elks, Eagles, and a past board member of Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa.
His family includes a special friend, Mabel Ellison of Oskaloosa; a sister in law: Barbara Barr in Arizona; nieces and nephews: Denise and Alan Rabenold, Judy and Lyle Roorda, Mike and Debra Phillips, all of Montezuma, Mark and Linnell Phillips of Tiffin, Candy Quarton and Cindy and Dennis Bastron, all in Arizona, Daws "Sandy" and Gretchen Barr in Texas, and Wendy and Brad Williams in California; and several cousins including David and Marilyn Phillips of Oskaloosa.

Besides his wife, Oren was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Glen "Skinny" James; and a sister, Margaret Weeks.

Funeral services for Oren James will be held Monday, December 28, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa V.F.W., D.A.V., and American Legion. Visitation will begin Sunday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 2 – 4 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Tioga Cemetery Association.
