Born in Annascaul, County Kerry, Ireland, son of James O'Mahoney and Bridget Shea. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1892. Uncle to Rev. Thomas Harrison of Peoria who celebrated his funeral mass. Cousin to Mary Ellen Lynch O'Connor Hoare.

Former provincial superior in Chicago of the Viatorian Fathers and former president of St. Viator's college in Bourbonnais, Kankakee county. When he became head of St. Viator's college in 1906 at the age of 28, he was reported to be the youngest college president in the United States. From 1915-1916, he was the CEO of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.
Father O'Mahoney, born in Ireland and ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1904, was one of the founders and first president of the National Catholic Educational association. For eight years preceding his illness, he was chaplain at the Chicago Municipal Tuberculosis sanitarium. Earlier he also served as pastor of St. Viator's church, 3618 N. Kedvale av.
