He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Pte Hayes was killed by a improvised explosive device while on foot patrol south of Check Point Paraang in southern Nad e-Ali area of Helmand province.
Aged 19, from Burwell, Cambridgeshire. Pte Hayes joined the regiment after completing infantry training in Catterick in February 2009, Before deploying to Afghanistan, Private Hayes completed a number of demanding exercises in the United Kingdom and convincingly won as a welterweight during the battalion's 2009 Inter-Company Boxing Championships. Known as Robbie, he deployed in October and quickly proved to be an extremely capable and motivated soldier. He was passionate about sports and previously played for Newmarket Rugby Club. His family said that although Robbie had an enthusiastic and energetic personality, he could just as easily behave with the manners of a gentle, reflective, caring person.
Pte Hayes is survived by his parents Steve and Diane, sister Jackeline, his girlfriend Jemma, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral with full military honours was held on January 29, 2010 at St Mary's Church, Burwell.
