James Joshua "Josh" Adams was born and raised in Pickens County, Alabama, the son of Robert Sanford Adams and Nancy E. Adams.

Times were hard in Pickens County and in 1893 Josh moved to Richmond, Texas with his parents and brothers Jenks and Lewis. In Richmond he married Virginia (Jennie) Ryon of Richmond, Texas, a member of an original pioneer family.

The brothers opened the "Three Brothers Saloon" on Calhoun St. in Richmond and ran it for several years until their wives, who were members of the Baptist Church, made them get out of it. Josh later became a house painter and decorator. After the death of his parents, Josh and Jennie stayed on in the family house on N. Second St. and Clay where they hosted many family reunions. They were the parents of four children: Alva, Beverly, Glendon Joshua, and James Seymour and the guardians of their nephew, Sanford Joshua Butler.

Josh and Jennie were fine people and very easy going. They are buried along with their children and his brothers in Morton Cemetery, Richmond, Texas.
