Richard was probably born about 1620, probably in England. He came to New England and settled in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts. He was a tailor by trade. Richard married a daughter of Gabriel Whelden, named Mary, about 1645. Richard and his wife had at least nine children, eight of whom are listed below, all probably born in Yarmouth.

He is called Richard "The Tailor" Taylor to distinguish him from "Rock Richard" Taylor. Another of Whelden's daughters, Ruth, married "Rock Richard" Taylor, who was a husbandman/farmer in Yarmouth. Around 1655, both Richard Taylors joined their brothers-in-law in a lawsuit against the widow of Gabriel Whelden for withholding part of Whelden's estate. Both Richards also became freemen in Yarmouth, one in 1652, the other in 1656. A Richard Taylor is mentioned often in Yarmouth records, probably this Richard, as the other Richard, a husbandman, was poor and probably not involved in tiown matters.

Gabriel Whelden of Yarmouth and Malden is the subject of an article in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol 163, published October 2009. The marriage of his daughters Ruth and Mary to two different Richard Taylors is discussed in detail in Vol 165 of the Register (July 2011).

He died before Dec 13,1673, with nine days of his wife's tragic death.

Children: Ann Taylor, Mary Taylor Marchant, Martha Taylor Bearse, John Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor Cobb, Hannah Taylor Crocker, Sarah Taylor, and Ann Taylor Davis.
