EAST LONGMEADOW - George Ralph Harwood, 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 2, 2010. He was a graduate of Technical High School, Springfield, MA. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army as a Warrant Officer in the 99th Division. George worked for 47 years at the Third National Bank in Springfield, MA. Upon retirement he worked for many years as an interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 63 years. He served on various committees including the Trustees, Administrative Board and Finance. He enjoyed spending time with his family at the camp at Little Alum Pond in Brimfield, MA. George was predeceased by Elsbeth H. Harwood and is survived by his wife Ruth Temple Harwood of Longmeadow, a son Alan D. (Molly) of Longmeadow, daughter Patricia H. Arnold of Duxbury, MA and Ruth's daughters Janis (Timothy) Metoxen and Jill (Charles) Roy. George is survived by five grandchildren, six step grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2010 from 4-7pm at Dickinson Streeter Funeral Home, 305 State Street, Springfield, MA. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 11:00am at Trinity United Methodist Church, 361 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA. Burial will be at the Longmeadow Cemetery at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 361 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA to establish a memorial in his name.
