Dr. John Failing was from the well known Failing Family of New York City that went to Portland Oregon in the mid 1800's and founded it. Father Josiah Failing was Portland's first mayor, bother Henry was a great industrialist and banker, as well as railraod owner. John went to TN from NYC for a Bapist reivial, met wife, and Abernathy, thru the Portland Abernathy's and married. He went to medical school in NYC, where he was raised, comes from a long line of Prussian Doctors who settled in the Mowhawk Valley of NY, worked at Bellview Hosptial Manhattan. Ran a small genral store in Ball's Camp, and lived above it.Died young leaving daughter Henrietta, age 20 in charge of younger brothers.
