Arley J. Haener, 93, of Grangeville, passed away January 19, 2009, at his home in Grangeville.

Arley was born July 20, 1915, to Albert Sr. and Amelia Goeckner Haener in Ferdinand, Idaho. He was the eldest of seven children. The family lived for a time in Ferdinand, later moving to Grangeville. He attended Grangeville High School. While attending high school, he was drafted and joined the United States Navy. Upon returning from serving in World War II on the island of Guam, he finished school and worked with his father, Albert Haener, Sr., delivering freight for Haener Freight. Times were tough and there were many challenges in getting the freight delivered. Arley worked with his father running Inland Lumber Company during those early years. When Albert Sr. retired, Arley operated the mill. Inland Lumber was located where the current Grangeville Senior Citizen Center is located.

In 1946, Arley married Louise Nordquist. Their marriage ended in divorce. In 1959, Arley and Irene Heartburg Webb were married. The couple started H & H Contractors and invested in real estate. Arley was a true self made man.

During their life together, Arley and Irene traveled the world. Many dear friends accompanied them on their journeys. Their most treasured times were winters spent in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and summers in Petersburg, Alaska. For many years they brought their halibut catch home to Grangeville and the Elks club put on a fish feed with Arley and Irene's catch. Irene passed away in April 2007.

Arley was a member of the Elk's club, Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, and a great supporter of the community. His generosity will be remembered by many for many years to come.

Arley is survived by his daughter, Sandy Haener and husband John Wyatt of Lewiston, Idaho; grandson, Pete Flynn of Lewiston; stepson, Monte Webb of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; stepdaughter, Jody Irwin and husband Tim of Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren; brother, Albert Jr. of Clarkston, Washington, and sister, Shirley Chilquist of Arizona.

Arley was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; his father Albert Haener Sr.; his mother Amelia Haener; brothers, Elmer and Earl, and sisters, Nell and Delphine.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Grangeville. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Friday, January 23, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville.
