Arthur T. Wayne was born on January 1, 1863 in Blacksville, SC while his mother was a refugee during the Civil War. His father, Daniel G. Wayne, Sr. was a successful builder in Charleston, SC, and his mother Harriet Julia Lavinia Ward was from an old Colonial family. While Arthur excelled in his academic studies, his family concluded that he was ill suited for employment in a trade. He married in 1890 Maria Louisa Porcher and they settled on Porcher's Bluff near Mount Pleasant, SC. Arthur had a keen sense of observation and a love for the outdoors. In the area where he lived fowl from all over America migrate and he became an authority on birds. He followed his passion and became one of the most knowledge ornithologists in the world. At first he had local recognition, and then national. People from all of the country visited him. He was a skilled taxidermist and his mounted birds were seen in museums all over the world. He also advocated conservation many years before it became a national movement. He wrote a definite work on ornithology: South Carolina Birds n 1910. He and his beloved wife had no children, but remained soul mates until his death in 1930 of a stroke. At his funeral, the participants noted that birds were chirping in great profusion, a most fitting tribute to a man whose lifetime passion was their study and welfare.
