He was born in Prince William County, Virginia and moved westward with his parents in the late 1780s. He married first wife Margaret Cornwall on Jan 27, 1806 in Kanawha County, Virginia (now WV). Their children were James (1807), John (1809), Isaac (1810) and Eleanor "Nellie" (1812). Margaret died in 1812 giving birth to Nellie.
Nathaniel was a hard-working farmer. Left with 3 small children and an infant, he quickly married second wife Margaret Miller on November 11, 1812 in Kanawha County, Virginia (now WV). They moved to the Peters Creek area of Nicholas County. Their children were Mary Polly (1816), Nancy (also 1816 but not a twin), Susan (1818), Andrew (1819), Sarah (1822), Redmond "Red" (1824) and James Allen (1826). Nathaniel died on his farm on Peters Creek in Nicholas County on March 18, 1854.
