Leah M. Barnett, 89 of Byesville, formerly of Cumberland, passed away Monday Sept. 15, 2008) at the Morrison House in Zanesville. She was born July 12, 1919 in Walhonding, daughter of the late Oscar and Lora (Gregg) Shearer. Mrs. Barnett was a former employee of RCA & NCR, she was the previous owner of the Lone Elm Truck Stop in Ava, and a 1939 graduate of Valley Local High School, Buffalo. She was a 30 year charter member of Valley Township VFW, where she held the title of chaplain for many years, and a member of Harmony Christian Church and Stop Nine Church of Christ. Leah enjoyed sewing and quilting, and her life was centered around her family and friends. She was loved by all who met her, and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her kind generous spirit. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Richard T. Barnett, whom she married Aug. 2, 1939, and who passed away April 7, 1987; a daughter, Delores M. Barnett, two brothers, Clyde and Vernon Shearer; four sisters, Vera Braun, Wilma Poat, Ruth Erskine and June Leslie; a son-in-law Terry Harrah. She is survived by two sons, William G. Barnett of St. George, Utah, and Richard T. Barnett of New Concord; a daughter, Roberta K. Harrah of Buffalo; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; an sister-in-law, Louella Shearer; several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, with Evangelist Abe Miller and Pastor Kelly Zirkle officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Cemetery.
