Served in World War II 13 Aug 1943 through 25 Dec 1945 in the 32 Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division. Battles and campaigns: Normandy-Northern France-Ardennes-Rhineland-Central Europe. Decorations and citations: World War II Victory Medal TWX WD 23 Oct 1945; European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; and Good Conduct Medal. Tank Driver & Marksman. Fought in the Battle of the Bulge--A World War II battle On December 16... On this day in 1944, in a surprise attack by Hitler along the Western front in the Ardennes mountains of Belgium and France, German troops "bulged" 60 miles into the Allies' side of the front. The attack succeeded until the weather cleared and Allied planes were able to bomb the area. By January the Allies had pushed Hitler's army back to the original line. The Germans lost 120,000 lives in the battle, compared to the Americans' 77,000.

BOYD - Nov. 10, 1920 -- Aug. 23, 2003 John Calvin "Cal" Boyd, 82, of Oakdale died Saturday at Garden City Health Care Center, Modesto. Mr. Boyd was a native of Mountain View, Okla. He had lived in Oakdale since 1937. He was a 25-year employee of the Oakdale Irrigation District; he was a heavy-equipment operator. He enjoyed fishing and travel. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his companion, Ardyce Boyd of Oakdale; children, Sherry Boyd of Escalon, and John Boyd Jr. and Sheila Sanders, both of Modesto; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine Boyd, and son Larry Stoll. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson. Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. Remembrances may be made to Community Hospice, 601 McHenry Ave., Suite C, Modesto 95350.
