Born in Nash County, North Carolina, his father was Jeremiah Bunting and his mother was Peggy Pierce. According to Bunting descendants in North Carolina, he was named "David", but his father died while David was young and raised by William and Penelope Bunting. William already had a son named David so he called this David "Davis".
