“They lived on a plantation in Rockville, SC on Wadmalaw Island after they were married. At some point the house burned and the Silver Teapot, Large ladle and a few pieces of flatware engraved AEK were saved. Mother [Lois Denaro Hendley] thinks that this happened after William Allen died and Ann Eliza was living alone.
Mother had seen some letters written to her daughter Bessie [Kenyon Denaro] talking about how hard life was. That someone had come all the way from Charleston to visit and she was sending back a sack of sweet potatoes and dried corn - and was sorry that she could not send more, but that times were so hard then.”
