On 7 October 1861 he enlisted in the 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Camp Chase and the 40th was mustered in to serivce on 21 November 1861.
On 29 January 1863 he was discharged by order 36 and 65 from the War Dept.
On 20 August 1863 he married Crissey Fulton also of Guernsey County, Ohio.
In the fall of 1864, they moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
In the fall of 1883, they moved to Gentry County, Missouri and settled near Ford City.
In the spring of 1894 they gave up their farm, because of failing health and moved to King City, Missouri.
His wife died 5 February 1895 and he followed her just over 2 years later.
