SPRINGFIELD - Margaret Ober Voyles, 92, of Springfield went to be with her lord at 2:07 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 30, 2009, at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center, with her daughter at her bedside.

She was born in Worthington, IN on Nov. 30, 1917, she was the youngest daughter of William H. and Carrie H. Collins Ober.

She was a 1936 graduate of Shortridge High School and attended St. Vincent Nursing School prior to marrying her high school sweetheart Col. James H. Voyles, Sr. in 1942 in St. Augustine, FL. After serving in World War II, Col. Voyles returned to active duty with the Selective Service division of the United States Army where they moved from Indianapolis to Michigan City, IN. and then in 1957 settled in Springfield where they raised their two children. Col. Voyles and Margaret were married for 53 years, until Col. Voyles' death in 1995.

She was also preceded in death by her brother Hon. George M. Ober and her sister Margaret Ober Johnson.

Margaret was a loving, generous kind lady. She knew no strangers and she loved the unloved. She was a member of the Philanthropic organization Tri Kappa, at one time held an Illinois Real Estate License, and was active in the First Church of Christ Scientist.

She is survived by her son, James H. Voyles Jr. (wife, Joan) of Indianapolis; daughter, Bitsy Voyles Knepler (husband, Kevin) of New Berlin; seven grandchildren, David Voyles, of Indianapolis, Jennifer Voyles Chan of Indianapolis, Katie Knepler of New Berlin, Calia Watson of Zionsville, IN, Robert Thomas of Zionsville, IN, Shannon Thomas of Louisville, KY., and Ronald Thomas of Galesville, MD.; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family expresses gratitude to Oak Terrace Healthcare Center and Memorial Home Services Hospice for their loving professional care during the last six years of her life.

Friends may call Monday Jan. 4, 2010, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel from 5 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 5, 2010, at Chatham United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 6, 2010, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Greenwood, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Memorial Home Services Hospice, 720 N. Bond St., Springfield, IL. 62702 or to the Oak Terrace Healthcare Center activity fund 1750 W. Washington St., Springfield, IL. 62702.
