Cairo Harold C. Altstaetter, 97, died at 9:25 a.m. April 18, 2012, at Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora. He was born May 3, 1914, in Cairo to Phillip Jacob and Emma Miller Altstaetter, who preceded him in death. On Jan. 24, 1939, he married Louise A. Lamb, who died Dec. 13, 1999. Mr. Altstaetter was a lifelong farmer, who did custom harvesting for several neighbors, and built the truss rafters for Cashway-Carter Lumber Yard. He was a 1931 graduate of Columbus Grove High School. He was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the IOOF Lodge, Cairo. He played trumpet in the Altstaetter Family Band and Pop Giesken's Booster Band and played baritone with the Village Idiots, the Lima Senior Citizens Band, the Bath Community Band and the Bluffton Senior Citizens Band. He had been a firefighter on the Cairo Volunteer Fire Department and served as a trustee for Monroe Township and on the Cairo school board. He enjoyed woodworking. Survivors include two sons, James Lee (Karen) Altstaetter, of Granbury, Texas, and Daniel Jay (Lucinda) Altstaetter, of Ada; two daughters, Janice Kay (Jack) Kissell, of Columbus Grove, and Vickie Jean (Alan) Altstaetter-Morgan, of Salida, Colo.; his special friend, Linda Annis, of Pandora; and 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Duane Altstaetter; a grandson, Jason Lee Kissell; and seven brothers and four sisters. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove. Pastor Rich Rakay will officiate. Burial will be in Altstaetter Cemetery, Cairo. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Cairo United Methodist Church or the Lima Area Concert Band..
