Gideon Claussen was an adventurer and wealthy farmer. He grew up in Jefferson and Christian Counties, Illinois. He went West as a young man around the time the Civil War broke to avoid the conflict. He drove a wagon train from St. Louis to San Francisco, and for 3 years was a sailor on vessels from San Francisco to islands in the South Pacific. He found gold while in California, which he used to buy a large farm back home in Christian County, in the Stonington and Owaneco area, and he continued to prosper.
"Uncle Gid" never married and cared for his mother in her old age. He was well respected in the county and held in high esteem by his family members. In his later years he resided with his brother William in Owaneco. His will provided generously for his brothers and their children and his friends.
