Norval E. Jacobson, 82, Pine city, died Tuesday, Aug. 17 at Lakeside Medical Center in Pine City.

He was born Dec. 19, 1910 in Pine City Township, one of 12 children of Anton and Dinah (Haug) Jacobson. He grew up east of Pine City on the family farm, was confirmed and baptized at Milburn Lutheran Church and attended Sauter Rural School.

Norval helped with the work on the family farm prior to enlisting in the United States Army in April 1942. During WWII he was in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, serving in the Southern Philippines and New Guinea.

On Aug. 19, 1945, while still in the service, he married Florence Lueth. Following his discharge in September 1945, the couple returned to Pine City where Norval worked as a milk hauler for Maple Island Dairies in Rush City for several years. He then worked at Sears in Minneapolis for about one year but returned to his milk hauling job with Maple Island.

In 1959 Norval and Florence purchased a farm near Greely, and Norval continued hauling milk for another five or six years while operating the farm. He continued farming until 1975, when he had open heart surgery. Although they sold the dairy herd, Norval and Florence continued to olive on the farm until their auction in 1990. They then moved to Pine City and have made their home there since.

Norval had several hobbies and enjoyed fixing things. With the help of his brother-in-law Harvey Lueth, he built his own garage. He enjoyed all kinds of woodworking and made many flower boxes and such. He also liked going to auctions and he loved to fish.

He had a special way with horses and owned several over the years. Norval was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Pine City, and belonged to the Grothe-Jacobson VFW Post in Rush City.

Norval is survived by his wife, Florence; son and daughters-in-law John and Jeanne Jacobson, Braham; and Debra Jacobson, Rush City; grandchildren Jeremy and Jenah, Jaime and Derek; brother and sister-in-law, Otto and Mary Jacobson and Raymond Jacobson, all of Pine City; and two sisters, Alice Boeck, Rush City; and Delores Girtz, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Dinah, his son, Jim, brothers, Gene, Stanley, Arthur, Harlan, Ole and Herbert and two sisters, Mable Struxness and Alva Wedin.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. The Rev. Jerry Flathman officiated. Music was provide by Glenna Reierson, organist, and Cindy Novy, soloist.

Casketbearers were Richard Jacobson, Tim Jacobson, Duane Boeck, Richard Lueth, Larry Lueth and Roger Larsen.

Burial was at Birchwood Cemetery, Pine City. Military honors were provided at graveside by Grothe-Jacobson FVW Post 6692, Rush City.
