Louisa J. Bateman (some report Eliza Jane) married James H. Claussen in Jefferson County, Illinois, in 1857. They farmed in Degognia township, near Raddle. Following his death she wed Abraham Rice in Jackson County in 1890. Descendants recall she was a mid-wife. She had a 53 acre farm with a log home on "the Slough" near the Mississippi River.
