Louisa J. Bateman (some report Eliza Jane) married James H. Claussen in Jefferson County, Illinois, in 1857. They farmed in Degognia township, near Raddle. Following his death she wed Abraham Rice in Jackson County in 1890. Descendants recall she was a mid-wife. She had a 53 acre farm with a log home on "the Slough" near the Mississippi River. She died of measles.Louisa J. Bateman (some report Eliza Jane), was probably living in Jefferson County, Illinois, when she married James Claussen there in 1857. A descendant recalls hearing that Louisa was a large, dark complexioned woman, who may have been a midwife. Louisa married a Civil War veteran named Abraham Rice after James' death, and she also outlived Mr. Rice. She acquired a 53 acre farm with a log home on "the Slough", near the river.
