James Barry, miner, came to Iron County in 1917 from the Vulcan area when the mines gave out. He first moved to Stambaugh and then to Bates Location. He and his wife, the former Mary Agnes Oberthaler, had seven children, John Henry, Agnes, Margaret, Omer, Earl, Clement and LaVerne.
James was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Barry, who immigrated to the Upper Peninsula from Ireland via Canada in 1859. His brothers were John and Tim, former Superintendent of Dickinson County Schools, a well known coach and referee in Iron County; and sisters Mary Rossi and Gertrude Smith.
Mary was the daughter of Frank and Catherine Martini Oberthaler. Her brothers were Joseph, Gerino and William, and sisters were Dussalina Johnson, Isabel, Agnes Fault and Ada who first married Joseph Lantz and later Oliver Andreasen, both well known county residents.
James worked at the Bates Mine during depression days and the family lived in a company house in the Bates Location. James and Mary were faithful church members in St. Agnes Parish, and every Sunday walked from the location to church with their family. The boys had jobs to help support the family income-farm work and trapping. Money was scarce for James, but he was always smiling and happy-go-lucky. He had many friends. James was killed in a shaft accident at the mine in 1936. After his death Mary worked in the cafeteria in the Duluth Mills, and later as a cook in Arnell's Restaurant.
James and Mary's son John Henry worked in the Zimmerman Mine as a pumpman and as a miner in the Homer Mine. He was killed in a stope in the Homer Mine. He married Hazel Nyren and they had two children, Grace and James.
Their daughter Agnes married Carl Holmberg, a bookkeeper in Duluth Steel Mills and they had four children, Harlan, Wayne, Elizabeth and Donald.
Their daughter Margaret married Voino Suliin, a miner at the Hiawatha and they had three boys, Ronald, a steamfitter who married Charlene and they had three children, Ronnie, Margaret and Debra; David, a metallurgist and author, who married Sheila Crooks and had two sons Robert and Paul; and Dwyane, a mechanic who married Linda Christensen and had one son Dwayne.
Their son Omer was a heavy equipment operator at Bengal, Cannon and Homer-Wauseca mines. He married Josephine Yopek and they had two children, Jerome, Manager of WIKB Radio Station in Iron River who married Kay Mattioli and had two children, Sandi and Kelly; and Cheryl, a Supervisor-Secretary for Internal Revenue, who married John Bennett, a teacher in Forest Park, Illinois.
A son Earl died in childhood.
Their son Clement, a miner at Hiawatha and Homer and a Mining Captain at Groveland, married Margaret Delesky and they had three children, Kurt, a Salesman for Shock Absorbers who travels all over the United States and is married to Betty Skog and has two children Tyler and Shane; DeLonne, a Secretary, married John DuCharme, Manager of an Electronics firm in Minneapolis, and Darrin, attending College.
A daughter LaVerne, a Secretary, died from a rare disease at twenty-two years of age.
