Al’s life began in Wittenburg, WI on May 31, 1921. His family moved to Climax-Scotts area where he attended school and worked on the family farm. Just before beginning his military service, Al was lucky enough to marry his childhood sweetheart, June L. Adams, on April 10, 1943. He then proudly served his country during WW II in the Air Force. Al and June had three daughters, Linda and Wilbur Harvey of Portage, Margie and Robert Goertler of Vicksburg, and Shirley and Gary Meyle of Fulton. After the war Al held several jobs and ended up settling at Simpson Paper Company, where he spent more than 20 years, retiring in 1983. In his retirement Al collected pins of all kinds and loved making small woodcarvings for many of his friends. He enjoyed telling jokes and making people laugh. Al also read many novels about the Old West. He also enjoyed listening to Big Band music, wearing all types of whimsical hats, and he never missed a garage sale. He was a member of Prairie Baptist Church in Scotts. Al was proud of his 6 grandchildren, Mike and Douglas Clark, Carmon and Erin Goertler and Shelly and Lahni Meyle; and 3 step-grandchildren, Danny, Gary and Dawn Harvey. His family also includes one nephew and several nieces and cousins. Al died Wednesday, February 4, 1998 at Tendercare Nursing Home in Kalamazoo. He was preceded in death by his wife June in 1985; his parents, Otto and Ella (Schmidt) Bartos; and his brother, Jim Bartos. Celebration of Life Services were held Feb. 6 at the Rupert, Durham. Marshall & Glen Funeral Home, Vicksburg. Al will be buried next to his wife June in Boughton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo or the American Cancer Society.
