John Thomas Rutledge was the eldest son of Joseph Rutledge (1811-1890) and Jane Booker (1814-1861). He married first Sarah Davis and had the following children: Joseph T Rutledge (1853- ), Edward W. Rutledge (1854- ), Benjamin H. Rutledge (1856-1880), John Lawrence Rutledge (1860-1918), William Nathaniel Rutledge (1862-1926), James M. Rutledge (1865-1945), and Wesley Rutledge (1868-). After his first wife Sarah died he married Mahallah Cook (1840-1912). His children by this second marriage were George Robertson Rutledge (1871-1949), Robert R. Rutledge (1872-1949), Sally M. Rutledge (1874-), Richard Lumpkin Rutledge (1875-1956), Walter D. Rutledge (1876-1911)and Eugene F. Rutledge (1878-). During the Civil War he fought with one of the regiments of Alabama Infantry from Chambers County. He died at the age of 79 within two weeks of his wife of pheumonia.
