An architect, Dennis attended schools in Coldchester and Mayville, New York and worked for four years in Minneapolis as a draughtsman. He began a partnership in a company named W.H. Dennis & Company and they built several well known building in Minneapolis including the Mankato Hotel. In 1888 Dennis moved to Tacoma, Washington where on his own he planned the Pierce County Court House, Puget Sound University and the Steilacoon Insane Asylum where years later, Hollywood film star Frances Farmer was placed by her mother. 1895 found Dennis in Los Angeles where he built the Hollywood Hotel, the Columbia Trust Building and Los Angeles High School, among several others. He also built a number of residential homes throughout Southern California. Dennis was married to the former Rosella Miller in 1887 and they resided at 7017 Hawthorn Avenue in Hollywood. Rosella (b. 1863; d. 1948) is interred next to Dennis.
