Rex was an only child. His mother died shortly after his birth and he grew up on the family farms near Scottville and Virden. He married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie L. Neuman in 1952. Rex was killed while serving in the US Navy as the radioman on a Neptune PV2 plane based at Okinawa, Japan. His plane went down with all 10 crewmen over the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea under mysterious circumstances. They were on a spying mission into China's waters. The plane lost both engines and ditched in the sea, whether due to mechanical malfunction alone, or enemy or friendly fire---all possibilities. He has a memorial marker next to his parents and near his childhood home near Scottville, IL.
