Funeral services for James F. (Pete) Tippit, retired Fort Gates grocer, were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Scott's Funeral Home chapel. Rev. D. W. Copeland and Rev. Joe Broadway conducted the rites, and burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Tippit, 71, died Friday at his home in Fort Gates. He had owned and operated a grocery store and service station in that community for more than 20 years before his retirement in 1974.
Son of the late Thomas and Eugenia Tippit, he was born in the Hubbard community Feb. 28, 1908. He was reared at Hubbard and married Miss Fannie Mae Copeland on March 23, 1924. They resided in Coryell County until 1937, when they moved to Tahoka. Mr. Tippit owned a grocery store there. They moved to Fort Gates in 1952.
Mr. Tippit was a member of the Cold Springs Baptist Church and the Woodman of the World Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Cecil (Dorothy) Curry of Plainview; two sons Bob A. Tippit and James E. Tippit, both of Gatesville; four sisters, Mrs. John (Clara) Taylor of Flat and Mrs. Alvis (Vida) Dixon, Mrs. R. M. (Birdie) Arnold and Mrs. Fay Shelton, all of Gatesville; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A daughter died in 1979. His grandsons and grandsons- in-law served as pallbearers for Mr. Tippit's funeral.
