Sewing scissors belonged to Keturah (Elder) Burgess - the only thing I have from my maternal great-grandmother. I have no photos of her, and Mother did not have much memory of her, because Keturah died when Mother was only 9. But - I have Keturah's sewing shears. It was one of the few things that Mother pointed out to me especially as something I should keep. There's a story about my grandfather Burgess and those scissors, when he was a very little boy. Grandma Keturah was making a dress, and some fabric had fallen to the floor. Papa asked his Mother if he could play with the "string." Busy sewing, she didn't look to see and gave permission. He had a wonderful time, running around outside, making it flip and float in the air like a kite. Of course, at the end of the day, it was filthy and in tatters. Well, it was not a string or a scrap - it was the finished ruffle for the dress, painstakingly sewn and gathered by hand (no sewing machine), and awaiting attachment to the dress.
