Of Klayton Thomas' many tattoos, only one bothered his mother. In his mother's view, the tattoo was prophetic.

It read, "Only the Good Die Young."

Marine Sgt. Klayton David Thomas was just 25 when he died Dec. 27 after a four-month battle with lung cancer, said his mother, Connie Thomas of Columbus, Neb. He died at his home in San Diego.

The Columbus native enlisted in the Marines less than a year after graduating from Columbus High School in 2003.

Advertising"Klayton was into sports — boxing, wresting, baseball, soccer" and had trophies in baseball and soccer, she said.

In the Marines, he earned the nickname "Special K," because his first name started with a K and he was a martial arts instructor. He also was an electrical equipment repair specialist and an expert marksman, Connie Thomas said.

"He was very proud of being a Marine," she said. "We're very proud of him."

Even as he was dying, he had a message for the grandchildren that his parents, David and Connie Thomas, raise: "Mom, tell them to be a Marine."

With the Marines, Klayton Thomas served in Iraq, Taiwan, Okinawa, Japan and the Philippines, where he met his wife.

It was in Iraq, a doctor told his mother, that Thomas was exposed to something so toxic that it turned his healthy lungs cancerous. The cancer was aggressive, boring baseball-sized holes in his bones, his mother said.

"He never complained," she said. "He was tough."

In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife of 2½ years, Miriam Joyce Thomas of San Diego; sister Kristal D. Thomas of Columbus; and grandparents Raymond and Marcella Karel of Clarkson, Neb.

Services were Jan. 2 at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus.
