David Smaltz died at his home in Altoona, at 9 o'clock Thursday morning June 10, of a complication of diseases after an illness extending over a period of one year. Deceased was born in Morrison's Cove, September 4, 1850. He was educated and reared in the vicinity of his native home. On December 27, 1879, he married Miss Sadie Young, of Roaring Spring, and several years later they took up their residence in Altoona and had since resided there. He was a blacksmith by trade and until taken ill was employed in the Twelfth Street Shops. He was a member of the Brethren church, being one of its most interested workers. He was treasurer of both the church and Sunday School and was held in the highest esteem by the members of the congregation and a wide circle of friends. He was also a member of of the Ben Davis Lodge of Odd Fellows and the Patriotic Order Sons of America. He is survived by his wife and the following brothers and sisters: Charles Smaltz, of Michigan; Mrs. Catharine Rabold of Altoona; Mrs. Louisa Shuman of Martinsburg. A sister, Mrs. Margaret Straesser, of this place, preceded him to the grave May 19. Funeral services were conducted at the house at 8 o'clock Saturday evening and on Sunday morning the remains were taken to Roaring Spring where interment was made.
