Nancy Adelaide Tomlinson Roderick, born May 22, 1925, in Independence, died peacefully at home Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009. She lived a life marked by joy, generosity and service to her family, church and community.

A resident of Salina since 1955, she was the beloved wife of Dr. James Evan Roderick Jr., her husband of 62 years, and the mother of Rees Roderick Olander, David E. Roderick, John Tomlinson, Tom Roderick, Melinda M. Roderick-Besnoin, and Richard A. Roderick, all of whom survive her. The daughter of Victor Rees Tomlinson and Marjorie Smith Tomlinson and stepdaughter of Marcie Tomlinson, Nancy was raised in Fort Worth, Texas, and graduated from the University of Kansas, where she became a lifelong member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority along with her sister, Mary Patricia Tomlinson Roth, of Lawrence, and a sister-in-law, Ina Katherine Roderick Lasley Wells, of San Antonio, Texas.

She was married at Christ Church, Greenwich, Conn., before moving with her husband first to the KU Medical School and then to Japan during the Korean War, a period in which she
developed a lasting interest in Asian culture.

Nancy's spirit of community service and devotion to her church, Christ Episcopal Cathedral, and her family was at the center of her life. She loved nothing better than to
gather friends and family for celebrations in her home, which was visited so frequently by traveling friends that her children affectionately referred to it as the little inn on the prairie. She regularly opened her home to extended stays by students, clergy and storm refugees.

Her public service to her community is too numerous to recount, but included hospital auxiliaries, PRIDE, PEO, the Daughters of the American Revolution, 30 years of parent teacher associations, Bible school and church camp leader, church guilds and charitable fundraising enterprises.

She was a passionate KU Jayhawk fan and an accomplished golfer at the Salina Country Club before hanging up her sticks.

Nancy, known in her family as The Duchess, loved to travel and bargain hunt, embraced new technologies from the first microwaves to computers (even if she didn't always master
them), and had a real "nose" for cooking. She pursued her interest in genealogy and family history, and kept up lively friendships with classmates from high school,
college and medical school.

She was godmother to a dozen children and a faithful caregiver to many neighbors. She took pride in the accomplishments of all those around her and witnessed a charitable and optimistic outlook on life.

Her surviving family includes 12 grandchildren, ages 32 to 2; two great-grandchildren, ages 2 to 4; and four nephews. Her surviving family also includes Rees (Wayne) Olander;
Emerson (Magali), Charlotte and Mae Olander; Evan Olander; David (Lany) Roderick; Alexandra Roderick; Natalie Rodrick (Stephanie Roderick); Tom (Donna) and Rachel Rae Roderick; Chasen Roderick; Melinda Roderick-Besnoin, Melivier, Roderick and Remington Besnoin; Richard (Sandra), James Evan III, Harrison and Grafton Roderick; four nephews,
Andy Lovan; Victor Lovan; James Spencer (Anne) Lasley; and John Roderick Rod (Kim) Lasley; and a cousin, Joseph (Barbara) McKinney.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium following the services.
