Former longtime Wasilla resident Eldor T. Hulke, 84, died Dec. 7, 2005, in Fairfax, Va. A funeral was at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 501 E. Bogard Road, Wasilla. Interment followed at Wasilla Cemetery. The Rev. Jonathan Rocky of St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer officiated. Pallbearers were Mr. Hulke's daughters, Frieda, Virginia and Jody; grandchildren, Lynette Krueger and Tim Hulke; and son-in-law, Paul Willing.

Mr. Hulke was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Courtland, Minn., to Ernst and Frieda Hulke. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II when he met Marie Smith, who became his wife. In 1953, he and his family moved to Wasilla from Pequot Lakes, Minn. Mr. Hulke spent the next 50 years in Wasilla, moving to Fairfax in 2003 to live with daughter Virginia. For many years, he worked for Firor Construction in Anchorage. He retired in 1972 after a brain tumor operation. Mr. Hulke was a 50-plus year member of St. John Lutheran Church in Palmer and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9365 in Wasilla. His special interests included gardening, working in his yard, woodcarving and diamond willow creations. His daughters remember his natural artistic talent; yodeling; love of flowers, birds and animals; growing giant cabbages; swinging in his hammock; enjoying his grandkids (and kids in general); and starting the family tradition of singing "You Are My Sunshine" during family outings "or any other time the spirit moved us." He was a lifelong Lutheran who was committed to his church.

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Frieda Smith of St. Louis, Mo., Virginia Hulke of Fairfax, Va., and Jody and Paul Willing of Anchorage; grandchildren, Veronica Smith, Randall Smith, Lynette Krueger, Heather Lacher, Carrie Moffitt, Robin Shaw, Laura Hulke, Tim Hulke, Skye Hulke and Taylor Willing; and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, L. Marie Hulke; son, Butch Hulke; grandson, Jason Tolin; sister, Norma Fehlman; and brothers, Marlin, Harold and Wilmer. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage 99507, or the National Capital Alzheimer's Association, 11240 Waples Mill Road, Suite 402, Fairfax, VA 22030.
