Mr. Friedland's skills as a stenographer led him into naval intelligence during World War II. After graduating with a B.A. in economics from Roosevelt University, he joined WBKB-TV in Chicago as a secretary, and later became national sales manager.
In 1953, as general manager of WICS-TV, he put the first UHF television station Illinois on the air. He was made vice president of Plains Television in 1959. In 1986 he retired from broadcasting to become associate to the president for community relations at Sangamon State University. He had been active in bringing Sangamon State University to Springfield, and was one of its first graduates, receiving an M.A. in communications in 1973. He served as president of the Springfield Association of Commerce and Industry, Sangamon State University Foundation, Jewish Community Relations Council, and Congregation B'rith Sholom. He was active in Big Brother/Big Sister, Jewish Federation of Springfield, B'nai B'rith, Memorial Medical Center Foundation and Springfield Mental Health Association.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth; two sons, Lewis A. Friedland of Milwaukee and Howard A. Friedland of Chicago; and one grandson.
