Mrs. Rita A. McKiel, 79, of Hamilton Communities, New Carlisle, and formerly of 108 Fifth St., LaPorte, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at 8:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend, following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 21, 1926, in Cato, Wis., to Edward and Theresa (Riederer) Wallander, and had lived in LaPorte for most of her life, coming from St. Louis, Mo.
Mrs. McKiel was retired from The LaPorte Herald-Argus, having worked in the Circulation Department. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, a former choir member at the church, and a member of St. Joseph Altar Rosary Society.
On Aug. 23, 1947, in Clarks Mills, Wis., she married Charles McKiel Sr., who died Sept. 17, 1988.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Timothy M.; one sister, Doris Schuh; and two brothers, Michael and Bernard Wallander.
Surviving are three daughters, Helen T. (Geoffrey) Wilson of Long Grove, Ill., Joan R. of South Bend and Barbara M. (Wayne) Trout of Fort Wayne; four sons, Charles W. Jr. (Barbara) and David L., both of Niles, Ill., Patrick M. of LaPorte, and Steven A. of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Johanek and Laura Braun, both of Manitowoc, Wis.; and four brothers, Edward Wallander of Manitowoc, Thomas Wallander of Springfield, Mo., Robert Wallander of Whitelaw, Wis., and Allan Wallander of Saugus, Calif.
The funeral Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Patrick Neary officiating. Friends may call at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m., with the rosary recited at 7 p.m.; and Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, LaPorte.
