Verna Winona (Streetman) Fiedler Verna Winona Fiedler was called home by our Heavenly Father on March 23, 2008, at the age of 96 from Austin,TX. Winona was born on September 26, 1911. She was the last surviving child of Charlie Mack Streetman and Clara Parasata Cook, early settlers of Rock Hill near Grapeland TX. Winona was raised and attended school in Grapeland until 1929, when she moved to Luling, Texas, where she finished high school. Winona met her husband Alfred in Luling TX and they were married on September 2, 1931. They moved to Austin TX in 1947 and opened Gibson's Wholesale on Colorado Street in Austin TX. They later operated Gibson's Discount Centers on Airport Blvd., Austin, Texas and in Taylor, Texas and San Marcos, Texas. After Winona and Alfred retired they enjoyed managing their property and going to their farm in Elgin, Texas, where Winona loved to fish. Winona was always active in church. She worked with two and three year old children in Sunday School for more then sixty years. She felt that the training children received at this young age was very important. When Woodlawn Baptist Church was opened as a mission church in South Austin she became a Charter Member and was one of two remaining charter members at the date of her death. Winona was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Alfred E. Fiedler, her parents and all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by two children, a daughter Avalon and husband Jim Burrows and a son Alfred Fiedler, Jr. and wife Linda. She was also survived by four grandchildren, who called her Mema, Terri Vercher and husband Paul, James Burrows and wife Candi, Yvette Gattis and husband David, and Nicole Fiedler and by three great grandchildren, Shelby Gattis, Courtney Burrows and Gannon Gattis, and three step-great grandchildren, Brady Vercher and wife Ali, Brody Vercher and Jenna Vercher, many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Harrell Funeral Home, Austin, TX. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Harrell Funeral Home. Austin, TX. Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery, Manchaca, TX. The family would like to thank the wonderful members of Woodlawn Baptist Church who continued to care about her even after she was unable to attend church, and a very special thank you to her nephew and niece Jimmy and Dorothy Dupree for the loving care they gave her that enabled her to live out her life in her own home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her honor to Woodlawn Baptist Church, Austin, Texas
