DSC Citation
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Air Corps) Howard W. Merkel (ASN: 0-403734), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-24 Heavy Bomber in the 380th Bombardment Group (H), FIFTH Air Force (Attached to RAAF), while participating in a bombing mission on 10 July 1943, against enemy targets at Babo, New Guinea. Captain Merkel was piloting the lead ship in a bombing formation that was intercepted by Japanese Zeroes when a cannon shell set fire to the bomb bay section. He continued his steady run on the target until his bombardier could release the bombs. Then the bomber circled out of control while Captain Merkel struggled to control it. He leveled off finally and four of his crew parachuted safely from the ship. After they had safely exited the aircraft, it went out of control and plunged to the ground. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Captain Merkel on this occasion, a the cost of his life, have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces.
