Born April 9, 1914 on the family farm in Orange Township, Fayette County, she was the daughter of James Marshall and Iva Martin Cullins, both deceased. She married Lowell F. May July 25, 1937; he preceded her in death July 18, 1987.
Mrs. May attended the Gray-Robinson one room school located on what is now part of the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary. She attended high school in Logansport. She was employed at the Rose Trellis Tea Room in Connersville prior to working in the Orange School cafeteria. At the age of 71, she retired from the Fayette County School Corporation after 34 years of employment. She was a 71-year member of Orange Christian Church where she had served as a deaconess and as a member of the Willing Workers women's group.
Survivors include daughter, Linda (Bill) Spencer of Fayette County; grandchildren, Mindy (Jim) Corder of Guthrie, Ky., Travis May (and his significant other, Barbara Benefiel), Shawn May and Bobbie Jo, Tracy and Jon Cowan, Tawnia and Charles Robertson, all of Rush County, Stacie and Tim Whitehead of Stearns, Ky.; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces, including a special niece, Donna Schroeder and her husband, Robert, of Orange.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons: Joseph M. May, who died Sept. 27, 1997, and Richard F. May, who died Oct. 14, 2007; three sisters, Louise Cullins, Leona Good, Ruby Wamsley; and two brothers, Donal and Leo Cullins.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Tim Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Orange Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
