Second Lieutenant Chambers was a member of the 4th Platoon, Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on July 27, 1953. Second Lieutenant Chambers was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Fellow platoon members claim that Earl was killed on the night of the cease fire and that he was the last officer killed in the war.
