Elijah was the seventh child of Joel Cornelius and Mary "Polly" Easley. He married Mary S. Bynum, Jan. 19, 1870, Elijah B. & Thos. Cornelius, bondsmen, p. 317, Book G, 1868-1871, Blount Co., Ala. by Justice of Peace. Mary was a daughter of James Bynum and Catherine "Katie" Prater, and a sister to Nancy K. Bynum, who married Elijah's brother Moses Andrew Cornelius.

Elijah and Mary were the parents of eight children, with only three reaching adulthood. The children were Elbridge C., Lura Samantha, Artilissa, Albert, Robert, Elijah Benson, Ada and Ruthie.
