Third son of Adam and Phoebe Hudson Stormer of Hancock Co, Indiana. About three years after Espy's birth, his father, Adam Stormer, died, and his mother, Phoebe, remarried, to William Copeland.
By 1857, Espy, along with two of his brothers, Jake and Adam, were living with their uncle, Jacob Kohl, of Marion Co.
Espy enlisted in the Indiana 14th Light Artillery Battery on 05 Mar 1864, and mustered out on 01 Sep 1865 at Indianapolis, IN.
In May 1876, Espy married Sarah Hamilton in Marion Co. At about the same time he began working for the Indianapolis Fire Department. Espy was a hoseman with Engine Co. No. 1 in 1889, and a pipeman at Engine Co. No. 1 when killed.
Espy died in the Bowen-Merrill fire in Indianapolis, IN on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1890. His wife having died three years earlier, Espy's children were orphaned by his death. A fund for the support of widows and orphans was set up immediately after the fire, and the Crown Hill Cemetery agreed to provide free burials for the fallen. According to The Indianapolis News of 13 Apr 1891: "...the three children of Espy Stormer were voted double allowances, for the reason that they were left without father or mother. Mr. D. B. Shideler qualified as their guardian soon after their father's death, and with the $30 per month and the rent of a tenement house left by their father, which the committee cleared of debt and placed in good repair, is enabled to board, clothe, and school them."
Espy was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, where he and the other fallen firefighters are on the Crown Hill "Tour of Heroes." The firefighters who were killed at the Bowen-Merrill fire were also memorialized at the Indianapolis Firefighter Museum.
