Major League Baseball Umpire. Born in New York City, he was one of the Major League's most respected arbiters of all time. For twenty-two seasons, he worked in the National League (1971-96). He officiated the National League Championship Series eight times (1974, 1978, 1983-85, 1988, 1990, 1992), National League Division Series twice (1981, 1995), three All-Star Games (1975, 1982, 1991) and two World Series (1977, 1988). He died of a heart attack at age 51 on opening day at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
