James E. Roberts, Indianapolis millionaire and businessman, died of bronchial pneumonia at his home, 1038 North Meridian at 3:50 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Roberts came to Indianapolis in 1893 after retiring as active head of Munk-Roberts Furniture Manufacturing company of Connersville, Ind. He was born Oct 27, 1849 at Brookville, Ind. and was educated in the Brookville schools. In early life he removed to Connorsville where he engaged in the hardware business and later affiliated with Mr. Munk. He retained his interests in the manufacturing concern and likewise engaged in real estate transactions here on a large scale. He was responsible for the erection of several large department houses on North Illinois and acquired ownership of the building at the corner of Washington and Meridian occupied by Merchants Heat and Light Company. He was a member of the Columbia Club and the Woodstock Country Club. He was a Republican and was at one time affiliated with the staff of Governor Durbin. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Henrietta West Roberts and two sisters, Mrs. Nannie R. Shirk of Tipton, Ind., and Mrs. Helen Heton, 1027 North Meridian. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
