Samuel Worthington Leiper was born July 11, 1827 in Henry County, Kentucky to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). Father has not been identified. His twin brother, William B Leiper, and Samuel worked as carpenters. Samuel married Mary Ann Hilliard on Aug 21, 1851. To this marriage was born a daughter, Josephine "Josie" Leiper. Samuel's wife, Mary Ann, died in 1874 and Samuel married Sarene Telle. Sam and Sarene had two children together: Horace P Leiper born in 1879 and a daughter, Winifred E Leiper, who died at age 20. Samuel was a civil war soldier and served with the Indiana Infantry, 26th Regiment, Company H. He joined the army in 1861 but was forced to honorably resign in June 1862 when he became violently ill with stomach/intestinal problems which continued to plague him till his death on July 12, 1892. Samuel was a 2nd Lieutenant when he was discharged.
