David Theodore Koontz (Kuntz) was born to Frederick and Nancy (Weitzel) Kuntz in Lafayette Indiana. Many records list 1869, however, here I have chosen to go with the headstone date of 1870. The family moved to Tipton, apparently after frederick's death. Dave, like many of his family, was initially employed by the railraod where he worked as a baggageman. He first married Margaret Lorman on 11 May 1896. Around that time, they moved to Indianapolis where Dave opened the Cozy Bar. Dave appears to have been a colorful and outgoing man, as evidenced by numerous stories appearing in the Tipton Indiana newspapers, even years after his move to Indianapolis, incluidng one about teh death of his dog "Roger Bean" in 1918 from influenza. The Cozy Bar later became the Cozy Restaraunt --perhaps with the advent of Prohibition?, and was reportedly popular with the theatrical crowd. One article details the number of autographed photos of stars of the day which hung on the walls.
Margaret and Dave had one daughter Lucille. Margaret died in 1903. Dave appears to have had a series of illnesses requiring hospitalization, and during one of them, met a nurse, Adeline Hughes, who became his second wife on 21 Jun 1915. Adeline died in 1927 and in 1929, Dave married again, this time Lillian Fritsche (Fritz). After his death in 1932, Dave was buried at Crown Hill, in between his 1st and 2nd wives.
