Martha Francis Howland was born in New York, as were her parents. She was descended from George Soule, a Mayflower passenger. On June 6, 1850, she married Rezin R Hammond. Their first child was Julia Hammond Moody (1852 - 1873). After their second daughter, Helen Hammond Wright, died in 1885, Martha lived with and helped raise her grandaughter, Edna Wright. Martha and Rezin were divorced in June of 1885.
