Henry F. Habeney.
Death Takes One of our Best German Citizens.
One of the best-known, most beloved and most respected German citizens of the city, a man of genuine German disposition, honesty, loyalty and love for his fellow human beings – born here in Indianapolis – was torn from our midst by relentless death yesterday afternoon after prolonged suffering. Mr. Henry F. Habeney, owner of the firm, Brinker & Habeney, at noon yesterday at his home, 1132 North Illinois St., surrounded by relatives, gently and blissfully drifted to the sleep from which there is no awakening here below. He succumbed to the dreaded tuberculosis, having suffered for many moons.
Henry F. Habeney was born May 16, 1853 here in Indianapolis by German parents, and here he has aspired since his birth and by his own diligence, his high morals, his amiability and above all by his sacrificing enthusiasm for all German aspirations, to be one of the best German citizens of the city.
Wherever it was necessary to defend German interests in promoting a charitable enterprise, Henry F. Habeney always came first. And so he was respected and loved everywhere. For 20 years he was a civil servant of the German Protestant Orphanage, for many years he was Treasurer of Zion's Church, and he also belonged to the following associations, lodges, etc.:
Deaconess Society, Men's Choir, Liederkranz [singing society], Germania Park Club, Independent Gymnastics Club, German American Democratic Club, Capital City Lodge of the Freemasons, Lodge No. 2634 of the Knights of Honor, etc. Further, he was a member of the board of several German clubs.
As you can see, Mr. Habeney was always present to advance the common good. At the same time his family life was happy, though marred by various deaths. For example, about eight years ago, his father died, which was followed three years ago by his mother, and shortly later his first wife. His second marriage was also a very happy one, if only for a short time. Mr. Habeney leaves, besides his widow, 7 children aged 9 months to 22 years. With them, hundreds and thousands of Indianapolis citizens share grief over the departure of the beloved.
The funeral is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
