Mother: Mary Merrill 1781-1841
*"Henry Varnum Poor was the first Andover native to go to college, graduating from Bowdoin College in 1835. He then became an attorney specializing in railroads. In 1849, he became editor of a weekly technical publication, the American Railroad Journal. He thought American railroads had a great future, but financing them was very unscientific. So, he developed methods of rating railroad bonds and converted the journal from a technical focus to a financial focus. He eventually bought the publication, and became a very prominent New York publisher in the mid to late 1800's. He sold the publication when he retired, and his name is still highly respected on Wall Street. He is the "Poor" in Standard and Poor's."
*His great-grandson, Alfred D. Chandler, Jr.,
