Joshua Nicholas Turner, born in 1819, somewhere in Tennessee, was the son of William Turner and an unknown wife.

Joshua Nicholas Turner and Harriet Lois Hatch were married about 1846, probably in Iowa County, Wisconsin, where both of their families resided at that time.

J. N. "Nick" Turner, along with his brother, Thomas Alexander Turner, became California 49ers, leaving family in Wisconsin, while they traveled to the California gold fields in 1849. It's likely the men traveled by ship to reach California so quickly.

After 1850, Nick and Thomas returned to Wisconsin to collect many family members, including wives, children, married siblings and their families. All were settled in various locations in California by 1860.

Nick settled his family in Nevada City. Harriet and Nick's first child, Thomas Greeley Turner, was born in Wisconsin. Their other 5 children, 4 sons and a daughter, were born in Nevada City, California, before 1860. Harriet (Hatch) Turner, was considered to be a beautiful woman, and often "held court" on the premises of their hotel.

J. N. Turner made his fortune in timber and lumber, and in the hotel industry, not in the gold fields. He built the first hotel in Nevada City, and later owned another hotel in Ophir/Oroville, as well as the Mountain House, a resort hotel, in the mountains of Butte County. Most of their children were wed at the Mountain House.

Joshua Nicholas Turner was elected to several terms as state representative to the California legislature, from Nevada County and later from Butte County.

Probate records provide the location of Joshua N. Turner's death, as Berry Creek.

Both Joshua N. Turner and his wife, Harriet Lois (Hatch) Turner, were, according to a descendant, buried in Old River Cemetery.

Engraved on the opposite side of J. N. Turner's grave marker, is the memorial for the wife of Charles Henry Turner, a son of J. N. and Harriet (Hatch) Turner.
